Mousevascularendothelialgrowthfactor164(VEGF164)isproducedasahomodimer.ItbindstotheFLT1/VEGFR1andKDR/VEGFR2receptors,heparansulfateandheparin.Itisaspecificmitogenforvascularendothelialcellsandastrongangiogenicfactorinvivo.Inadditiontoitsactionasamitogenitisapotentvascularpermeabilityfactor(VPF)invivoandisalsoachemoattractantformonocytesandendothelialcells.Itinducesendothelialcellproliferation,promotescellmigration,inhibitsapoptosisandinducespermeabilizationofbloodvessels.Itmayplayaroleinincreasingvascularpermeabilityduringlactation,whenincreasedtransportofmoleculesfromthebloodisrequiredforefficientmilkproteinsynthesis.
