Thesmallubiquitin-relatedmodifier(SUMO)belongstothegrowingfamilyofubiquitin-relatedproteinsinvolvedinposttranslationalproteinmodification.Itispresentinalleukaryotickingdomsandishighlyconservedfromyeasttohumans.TheSUMOfamilyarecomposedofthreetypes;SUMO1,SUMO2andSUMO3.Likeubiquitin,SUMO1isconjugatedtotargetproteinsbyanenzymaticcascadeinvolvingE1,E2enzymeandE3lygase(knownassumoylation).IthasbeenknownthatmanysubstratessuchasRanGAP1,PMLandIkBaproteinsarepresentincells.Incontrasttoubiquitination,sumoylationdoesnottagproteinsfordegradationbythe26Sproteosome.Sumoylationparticipatesindiverseeventssuchasnucleartransport,transcriptionalregulation,chromosomesegregationandcellcyclecontrol.Alsothemodificationisassociatedwithpathologicalconditions(neurodegeneration,diabetesandInflammation).
