Interleukin-4(IL-4)isacytokineproducedbytype2helperTcells,theTh2cells.ThesecellstendstomakeaspecificsetoflymphokinesincludingIL-4,IL-5,IL-6,IL-10,IL-13,IL-3andGM-CSFandfailtoproduceIL-2,IFN-γ,andlymphotoxin(TNF-β).Inaddition,mastcellscanproduceIL-4.IL-4exertsnumerouseffectsonvarioushematopoieticcelltypes.OnBcells,IL-4promotesimmunoglobulinclassswitchingtoIgEandIgG1isotypesandupregulatesMHCclassIIandCD23expression.IL-4promotessurvival,growth,anddifferentiationofbothTandBlymphocytes,mastcellsandendothelialcells.Inaddition,IL-4inhibitstheproductionofTNF,IL-1,andIL-6bymacrophages.
