Interleukin-12(IL-12),alsoknownasNaturalKillerCellStimulatoryFactor(NKSF)orCytotoxicLymphocyteMaturationFactor(CLMF),isaheterodimericpleiotropiccytokinemadeupofa40kDa(p40)subunitanda35kDa(p35)subunit.IL-12isproducedbymacrophagesandBlymphocytesandhasbeenshowntohavemultipleeffectsonTcellsandNaturalKiller(NK)cells.SomeoftheseIL-12activitiesincludetheinductionofIFN-γandTNFinrestingandactivatedTandNKcells;theenhancementofcytotoxicactivityofrestingNKandTcells,thestimulationofrestingTcellproliferationinthepresenceofacomitogen;andtheenhancementofNKcellproliferation.CurrentevidenceindicatesthatIL-12isakeymediatorofcellularimmunityandinducesthedifferentiationofTh1cellsfromprecursorThelpercells.Basedonitsactivities,ithasbeensuggestedthatIL-12mayhavetherapeuticpotentialasavaccineadjuvantthatpromotescellularimmunityandasanantitumorandantiviralagent.
