Glutathioneperoxidase5(GPX5),alsoknownasepididymalsecretoryglutathioneperoxidaseisanenzymethatinhumansisencodedbytheGPX5gene.GPX5belongstotheglutathioneperoxidasefamily.Itisspecificallyexpressedintheepididymisinthemammalianmalereproductivetract,andisandrogen-regulated.UnlikemRNAsforothercharacterizedglutathioneperoxidases,thismRNAdoesnotcontainaselenocysteine(UGA)codon.Thus,theencodedproteinisselenium-independent,andhasbeenproposedtoplayaroleinprotectingthemembranesofspermatozoafromthedamagingeffectsoflipidperoxidationand/orpreventingprematureacrosomereaction.Alternativelysplicedtranscriptvariantsencodingdifferentisoformshavebeendescribedforthisgene.
