Glutaredoxin(Grx),alsoknownasthioltransferase,isasmallheat-stableoxidoreductase.Grxsformpartoftheglutaredoxinsystem,comprisingNADPH,GSHandglutathionereductase,whichtransferselectronsfromNADPHtoglutaredoxinsviaGSH(1).FirstdiscoveredinE.coliasGSH-dependenthydrogendonorsforribonucleotidereductase,GrxcatalyzesGSH-disulfideoxidoreductaseviatworedox-activecysteineresidues(2).Theactivesequence(Cys-Pro-Tyr-Cys)isconservedinavarietyofspecies.The12-kDdithiolproteinhasaroleinreductionofmixeddisulfidesincellsexposedtooxidativestress(3).
