Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphatedehydrogenase(GAPDH)isacatalyticenzymecommonlyknowntobeinvolvedinglycolysis.Theenzymeexistsasatetramerofidentical37-kDasubunits.GAPDHcatalyzesthereversIBLereductionof1,3-bisphosphoglyceratetoglyceraldehydes3-phosphophateinthepresenceofNADPH.Apartfromplayingakeyroleinglycolysis,thisubiquitouslyexpressedenzymealsodisplaysotheractivitiesunrelatedtoitsglycolyticfunction.GAPDHisreportedtobeinvolvedintheprocessesofDNAreplication,DNArepair,nuclearRNAexport,membranefusionandmicrotubulebundling(1-5).OtherstudiesalsoprovideevidenceofGAPDHplayinganessentialpartoftheprogramofgeneexpressionobservedinapoptosisandaspartofthecellularphenotypeofage-relatedneuro-degenerativediseases(6-7).
