CD68[Macrosialin;GP110;SCARD1]isasingle-passtypeImembraneproteinwhichbelongstotheLAMPfamily.CD68ishighlyexpressedbybloodmonocytesandtissuemacrophages.Itisalsoexpressedinlymphocytes,fibroblastsandendothelialcellsandinmanytumorcelllineswhichcouldallowthemtoattachtoselectinsonvascularendothelium,facilitatingtheirdisseminationtosecondarysites.CD68playsaroleinphagocyticactivitiesoftissuemacrophages,bothinintracellularlysosomalmetabolismandextracellularcell-cellandcell-pathogeninteractions.ItisacommonlyusedMarkerformacrophages.However,anumberofstudieshaveshownthatCD68antibodiesreactwithotherhematopoieticandnon-hematopoieticcelltypes,suggestingthatCD68maynotbeamacrophage-specificantigen.CD68bindstotissue-andorgan-specificlectinsorselectins,allowinghomingofmacrophagesubsetstoparticularsites.RapidrecirculationofCD68fromendosomesandlysosomestotheplasmamembranemayallowmacrophagestocrawloverselectin-bearingsubstratesorothercells.
