izTRAILisanewlyavailable,highlyactiverecombinantformofsolublehumanTRAIL.DuetoatrimerizingN-terminalisoleucinezipper(iz)motiftheintrinsictrimerizationofTRAIL,requiredforapoptosis-inducingactivityofTRAIL,isenhancedwhencomparedtonon-taggedsolublehumanTRAIL(shTRAIL).Therefore,izTRAILisapotentinducerofapoptosisinmanyhumancancercells,butnotnormalhumanhepatocytes.Inaddition,thehalf-lifeofizTRAILisabouteight-foldhigherthanthehalf-lifeofshTRAIL.ThesepropertiesrenderizTRAILhighlysuitableforboth,invitroandinvivouse,particularlyforstudiesinwhichinvestigatorsplantotransfertheirinvitroresultsintoaninvivosystemwithhumancancercellsinxenotransplantsettingsexaminingsusceptibilitytoTRAIL-inducedapoptosis.
