14-3-3,afamilyofacidicandsolubleproteins,highlyconservedinaminoacidsequencesfromyeasttomammals,isexpressedinalleukaryoticcells.Sevenisoforms(β,γ,ε,η,ζ,σandτ/θ)encodedbysevendistinctgenesareidentifiedinmammalsandformshomo-andhetero-dimericcup-shapedstructures.As14-3-3isinteractedwithmorethan100bindingpartners,itregulateskeyproteinsinvolvedinvariousBIOLOGicalprocessessuchassignaltrans-duction,cellcycle,transcriptionalcontrol,cellproliferation,apoptosis,andionchannelphysiology.Most14-3-3requiresphosphorylationofserineorthreonineresiduesinthetargetsequence.Thisproteinisabundantlyexpressedinthebrainandhasbeendetectedinthecerebrospinalfluidofpatientswithdifferentneurologicaldisorders.
