Resistin(FIZZ3;ADSF;Adiposetissue-specificsecretoryfactor)isa12.5kDacysteine-richadipocytokine.Inrodents,increasedresistin-levelsimpairinsulinaction,whilegeneticablationordown-regulationoftheresistingeneimprovesinsulinsensitivity.Inhumansmostreportsidentifiedinflammatorycellsandbonemarrow-derivedcellsasthemainsourceofresistin,indicatingaroleininflammatoryresponses.PlasmaresistinlevelswereshowntobeassociatedwithC-reactiveprotein(CRP),inflammatoryboweldisease,Crohn’sdisease,atherosclerosisandacutepancreatitis.Atherosclerosisandobesityareincreasinglyviewedaschronicinflammatoryconditions.Circulatingresistinlevelswerereportedtobeincreasedinobesityanddiabetes.
