Retinolbindingprotein4(RBP4;RBP)isa21kDasecretedprotein,amemberofthelipocalinfamilyandisknownastheprimarytransporterofretinol(vitaminA)totissues.ArecentreportrevealedRBP4asanadipokinelinkingglucosetransporter4(GLUT4)suppressioninadiposetissuetoinsulin.ElevatedhumanandmouseserumRBP4levelsareassociatedwithinsulinresistanceanditsseverity,obesityandcertaincomponentsofmetabolicsyndrome.FurThermore,humanserumRBP4levelsarecloselyrelatedtorenalfunctionandrecentstudieshaveshownanassociationbetweenserumRBP4levelsandurinaryalbuminexcretion.TheurinaryRBP4concentrationmaybeavaluableMarkerforboth,insulinresistanceandmicroalbuminuriaininsulin-resistantsubjects.
