Nicotinamidephosphoribosyltransferase(Nampt;pre-Bcellcolony-enhancingfactor;PBEF;Visfatin)isan52kDAADIpokinesecretedbyadiposetissueandinvolvedinthebiosynthesisofnicotinamideadeninedinucleotide(NAD+).TwoformsofNamptexist,anintracellularform(iNampt)andanextracellularform(eNampt).WhilethefunctionofiNamptasanessentialandrate-limitingNAD+biosyntheticenzymeiswellestablished,thephysiologicalroleofeNamptisstillamatterofdebate.IthasbeenshownthatNamptexpressionisincreasedindifferentdiseases,likediabetes,obesity,fetalgrowthretardation,sepsis,inflammatoryboweldisease,Crohn’sdiseaseandrheumatoidarthritis.FurThermore,NamptmightbeaMarkerofpre-eclampsiaandofendothelialhealth.
