Oxidativedamagetolipids(lipidperoxidation)hasbeenfoundtoplayanimportantroleinvariousdiseaseandagingprocesses.Duringearlystagesoflipidperoxidation,lipidhydroperoxides(LOOH)areformed.Thesecanreactadditionallytoformlaterstageendproductssuchasmalondialdehyde(MDA)andhydroxynonenal(HNE).LOOHismeasuredtoquantifyearlystageoracutelipidperoxidationwhileMDAiscommonlymeasuredtoquantifylatestageorchroniclipidperoxidation.Morerecently,ithasbeenreportedthat13-hydroperoxyoctadecanoicacid(13-HPODE),aprecursorto13-hydroxyoctadecanoicacid(13-HODE)canreactwithproteinstoformmeasurableadductsbycovalentlybindingtospecificaminoacidresidues.TheHexanoyl-Lysine(HEL)adductisformeduponoxidativemodificationofomega-6fattyacidssuchaslinoleicacid,thepredominantpolyunsaturatedfattyacid(PUFA)inthehumandiet,andarachidonicacid.HELmaybeanotherusefulbioMarkerfordetectingandquantifyingtheearlierstagesoflipidperoxidation.
