IL-17isacytokinethatactsasapotentmediatorindelayed-typereactionsbyincreasingchemokineproductioninvarioustissuestorecruitmonocytesandneutrophilstothesiteofinflammation.IL-17isproducedbyT-helpercellsandisinducedbyIL–23whichresultsindestructivetissuedamageindelayed-typereactions.IL-17isaproinflammatorycytokinethatrespondstotheinvasionoftheimmunesystembyextracellularpathogensandinducesdestructionofthepathogen’scellularmatrix.IL-17actssynergisticallywithtumornecrosisfactorandinterleukin-1.NumerousimmuneregulatoryfunctionshavebeenreportedfortheIL-17familyofcytokines,presumablyduetotheirinductionofmanyimmunesignalingmolecules.ThemostnotableroleofIL-17isitsinvolvementininducingandmediatingproinflammatoryresponses.IL-17iscommonlyassociatedwithallergicresponses.IL-17inducestheproductionofmanyothercytokines(suchasIL-6,G-CSF,GM-CSF,IL-1β,TGF-β,TNF-α),chemokines(includingIL-8,GRO-α,andMCP-1)andprostaglandinsfrommanycelltypes(fibroblasts,endothelialcells,epithelialcells,keratinocytes,andmacrophages).TheIL-17familyhasbeenlinkedtomanyimmune/autoimmunerelateddiseasesincludingrheumatoidarthritis,asthma,lupus,allograftrejection,anti-tumourimmunityandrecentlypsoriasis.
