Interleukin15(IL-15)isacytokinewithstructuralsimilaritytoIL-2.LikeIL-2,IL-15bindstoandsignalsthroughacomplexcomposedofIL-2/IL-15receptorbetachain(CD122)andthecommongammachain(gamma-C,CD132).IL-15issecretedbymononuclearphagocytes(andsomeothercells)followinginfectionbyvirus(es).IL-15isconstitutivelyexpressedbyalargenumberofcelltypesandtissues,includingmonocytes,macrophages,dendriticcells(DC),keratinocytes,fibroblastsandnervecells.Asapleiotropiccytokine,itplaysanimportantroleininnateandadaptiveimmunity.IL-15regulatesTandnaturalkiller(NK)cellactivationandproliferation.Inrodentlymphocytes,IL-15preventsapoptosisbyinducinganapoptosisinhibitor,BCL2L1/BCL-x(L).InhumanswithceliacdiseaseIL-15similarlysuppressesapoptosisinT-lymphocytesbyinducingBcl-2and/orBcl-xL.
