trans-2-DecenoicacidisanunsaturatedshortchainfattyacidthatissecretedbyS.mutans.Itisanovelinterkingdom-signalingmolecule(fromaGram-positiveorganism)thatinhibitshyphalformationofthedimorphicfungusC.albicansbyblockingtheyeast-to-hyphalmorphologicaltransition.Itmightplayacriticalroleinregulatingthedisintegrationofaerobicgranules.Asinotherpartsofthebody,StreptococciandCandidacoexistinthemouthandcompeteforthesamesubstrate.InamixedspeciesenvironmentsuchastheoralcavitythequantitativeandqualitativenatureofthebacteriamodulatesthebiofilmformationofC.albicans.trans-2-Decenoicacidisstructurallysimilartoundecylenicacid,theactiveingredientofDesenex,awidelyusedantifungalagent.Inaddition,trans-2-DecenoicacidinhibitedtheluciferasereporteractivityandthereforethebioluminescenceoftheGram-negativemarinebacteriaVibrioharveyi.trans-2-Decenoicacidisfoundinroyaljellyproducedfromthehypopharyngealandmandibularglandsecretionsofhoneybees.Demonstratesweakestrogenicactivity,inhibitingbindingof17β-estrADIoltoestrogenreceptorβ.
