Beta-Aminoisobutyricacidisanon-proteinaminoacidoriginatingfromthecatabolismofthymineandvaline.beta-Aminoisobutyricacidoccursintwoisomericformsandbothenantiomersofbeta-Aminoisobutyricacidcanbedetectedinhumanurineandplasma.Inplasma,theS-enantiomeristhepredominanttypeduetoactiverenalreabsorption.Incontrast,urinealmostexclusivelycontainstheR-enantiomerofbeta-Aminoisobutyricacid,whichiseliminatedbothbyfiltrationandtubularsecretion.TheS-enantiomerofbeta-Aminoisobutyricacidispredominantlyderivedfromthecatabolismofvaline,theR-enantiomeristheproductofthecatabolismofthepyrimidinebasesuracilandthyminebytheenzymedihydropyrimidinedehydrogenase(DPD),inwhatconstitutesthefirststepofthepyrimidinedegradationpathway.Transienthighlevelsofbeta-Aminoisobutyricacidhavebeenobservedunderavarietyofpathologicalconditionssuchasleadpoisoning,starvation,intotalbodyirrADIationandinanumberofmalignancies.RecentlyR-/S-enantiomermixtureshavebeenshowntobebrowninginducerofwhiteadiposetissue.
