N-Dodecanoyl-L-homoserinelactone(C12-HSL)isasmalldiffusIBLesignallingmoleculeinvolvedinquorumsensing,therebycontrollinggeneexpressionandaffectingcellularmetabolisminbacteria.Inadditiontoregulatingbacterialfunctions,C12-HSLactivatesNF-κBinRAW264.7macrophages,increasingtheexpressionofTNF-α,interleukin-1β(IL-1β)andIL-8,whileotherlactonesdonot.Inaddition,C12-HSLalterscellcyclingandmetabolismofhumankeratinocyte(HaCaT)cells.ItisimportanttonotethatC12-HSLisdistinctfromN-3-oxo-dodecanoyl-L-homoserinelactone,whichisproducedatdifferenttimesinbiofilmdevelopmentandhasdifferentcellulareffects.
