N-(3-Oxohexanoyl)-L-homoserinelactoneisasmalldiffusIBLesignalingmoleculeandisamemberofN-acyl-homoserinelactonefamily.N-acylhomoserinelactones(AHL)areinvolvedinquorumsensing,controllinggeneexpression,andcellularmetabolism.Thediverseapplicationsofthiskindofmoleculeincluderegulationofvirulenceingeneral,infectionprevention,andformationofbiofilms.Atincreasedpopulationsofbacteria,localizedhigherconcentrationsof3OC6-HSL,anendogenousligandtotranscriptionalfactorLuxR,leadstoincreasedproductionofboththeAHLsynthaseandproteinsresponsibleforbioluminescence.Numerousotherspeciesofbacteriaalsoemploy3OC6-HSLincell-to-cellcommunication.AnautoinducerofP.fischeriluciferaseandaspecficgeneticregulatorthatisunrelatedtoatleastoneoftheenzymesystemsthatitinduces.Itactsafterexcretionandaccumulationintheextracellularmedium.
