Glycochenodeoxycholicacid(GCDCA)isabilesaltformedintheliverthatactsasabiosurfactanttosolubilizelipidsforabsorptionandisitselfabsorbed.GCDCAfunctionsasacholeretic,increasingthevolumeofbilesecretedfromtheliver,andacholagogue,promotingthedischargeofbilefromthedigestivesystem.GCDCAhasbeenusedtodemonstratearoleforbileacidsinpromotingcolorectalcarcinogenesisandtoinhibitcalciumhydroxyapatiteprecipitationtostudythepathogenesisofblackpigmentgallstones.ThisproducthasalsobeenshowntoinduceapoptosisinisolatedhepatocytesviamodulationofPKCactivity.Thiscompoundisusedasananionicdetergenttosolubilizelipidsandasachiralreagent.
