Naturallyoccurringcarbohydratederivativethatisanimportantstructuralcomponentofnearlyallconnectivetissuesandisalsofoundinmanyplantgums.Metabolizedtoglucaricacid,xylitol,andL-xylulose,andhumansmayalsobeabletouseglucuronolactoneasaprecursorforascorbicacidsynthesis.Usedasadetoxicant.Theliverusesglucosetocreateglucuronolactone,whichinhibitstheenzymeB-glucuronidase(metabolizesglucuronides),whichshouldcauseblood-glucuronidelevelstorise.Glucuronidescombinewithtoxicsubstances,suchasmorphineanddepotmedroxyprogesteroneacetate,byconvertingthemtowater-solubleglucuronide-conjugateswhichareexcretedintheurine.Usedasbuildingblockandstartingreagentforsynthesisofdrugs,opticallyactiveglucopyranosesandlong-chainalkylglucofuranosides.
