Folicacid,alsoknownasfolate,isaBvitaminisanessentialnutritionalcomponentofthehumandiet.Itisnecessaryfortheproductionandmaintenanceofnewcells,forDNAsynthesisandRNAsynthesis,andforpreventingchangestoDNA,andconsequentlycancer.Itisespeciallyimportantduringperiodsoffrequentcelldivisionandgrowth,suchasinfancyandpregnancy.Folateisneededtocarryone-carbongroupsformethylationreactionsandnucleicacidsynthesis.FolicaciddeficiencyhindersDNAsynthesisandcelldivision,affectinghematopoieticcellsandneoplasmsthemostbecauseoftheirgreaterfrequencyofcelldivision.Bothadultsandchildrenneedfolatetomakenormalredandwhitebloodcellsandpreventanemia.Deficiencyoffolicacidinpregnantwomenhasbeenimplicatedinneuraltubedefects(NTD).
