Flumequineisafluoroquinolonesyntheticchemotherapeuticantibioticusedtotreatbacterialinfections.Targetsprimarilygramnegativebacteria,especiallythosewhichcauseentericinfectionsinanimals.ItisusedtostudyprocessesthataffectmammalianchromosomeandDNAunwindingatthelevelofgyrase/topoisomerases.Itinhibitstopoisomerases,whichareneededforthetranscriptionandreplicationofbacterialDNA.Theinhibitionofthetopoisomerasesresultsinstrandbreakageofthebacterialchromosome,supercoilingandresealing.Therefore,DNAreplicationandtranscriptionisinhibited.ItwasalsousedtostudyhepatocarcinogenicityandDNAdamageinmiceandthemechanismsofquinoloneresistance.
