Atorvastatin(Lipitor)isamemberofthedrugclassknownasstatins.Itisusedforloweringcholesterol.Atorvastatinisacompetitiveinhibitorofhydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzymeA(HMG-CoA)reductase,therate-determiningenzymeincholesterolbiosynthesisviathemevalonatepathway.HMG-CoAreductasecatalyzestheconversionofHMG-CoAtomevalonate.Atorvastatinactsprimarilyintheliver.Decreasedhepaticcholesterollevelsincreaseshepaticuptakeofcholesterolandreducesplasmacholesterollevels.IC(50)valuesareinthelownanomolarrangewithcytotoxicityvaluesbeinglargelyinthelowmicromolarrange.
