Arganoilispressedfromthekernelsofthefruitsfromtheargantree(Arganiaspinosa(L.)Skeels;Sapotaceae)thatisendemictosouthwestMorocco.Coldpressedarganoilischaracterizedbyhighlevelsoflinoleicandoleicacids,tocopherols(inparticularγ-tocopherol),andminorcompoundssuchassterols,carotenoids,andsqualene.Themainfattyacidsinthesetriglycerides,areoleicandlinoleicacids(47%and33%,respectively),aswellasomega-6fattyacids.Saturatedfattyacidsinthetriglyceridesofarganoilarestearicandpalmiticacid(5.5%and15.5%,respectively).Minorcomponentsofarganoilincludepolyphenols,squalene,carotenes,triterpenealcoholsandsterols(spinasterol,schottenol).Pre-clinicalandclinicalstudiesreporthypolipidemic,hypocholesterolemic,hypoglycemicandantihypertensiveeffectsofnutritionaluseofarganoilinadditiontoitswell-documentedanti-oxidantandmoisturizingeffectsusedforexternalcosmeticapplications.Usedasfoodsupplementandsolventaidforlipophiliccompounds.
