Alcianblue8GXisprimarilyusedfordemonstratingacidmucopolysaccharides,whichitdoesquiteselectively.Inrecentyearstherehasbeensomedifficultyobtainingthedye.AlcianBlue8GXisalsosuitablefordetectionofglycoproteinsonnitrocelluloseandinPAGEgels.Thereareotherdyessimilartoalcianblue,althoughnotnecessarilybelongingtothesameclassofdyes.Alciangreenhasgainedsomepopularity,andalcianyellowhasbeensuggested,especiallyinamethodfordemonstratinghelicobacter.Theyareusedforacidmucopolysaccharidesinthesamewayasalcianblue.Theyhavenoparticularadvantagefordemonstratingmucin.AccordingtotheMerckIndexthegroupsmarkedXsplitoffduringstaining.
