Vimentinisamemberoftheintermediatefilamentfamilyofproteinsfoundinvariousnon-epithelialcells,especiallymesenchymalcells.VimentinisresponsIBLeformaintainingcellshape,integrityofthecytoplasm,andstabilizingcytoskeletalinteractions.Vimentinplaysasignificantroleinsupportingandanchoringthepositionoftheorganellesinthecytosol.Althoughmostintermediatefilamentsarestablestructures,vimentinalsohasadynamicnaturewhichisimportantwhenofferingflexibilitytothecell.Twomonomerswhichhavecentralα-helicaldomains,cappedoneachendbynon-helicaldomainstwistaroundeachothertoformacoiled-coildimer.Twodimersthenformatetramer,which,inturn,formasheetbyinteractingwithothertetramers.Therearesomereportsrelatedtothebiochemicalfunctionofintermediatefilamentnetwork.TheintracellularmovementofLDL-derivedcholesterolfromthelysosometothesiteofesterificationisavimentin-dependentprocess.Aroleforvimentininmechanotransductionofshearstresshasalsobeensuggested.ThemechanicalstressoffluidshearonendothelialcellsseemstotriggerMAPKsignalingpathwaysandstimulatesproliferation.Vimentinsareclass-IIIintermediatefilamentsfoundinvariousnon-epithelialcells,especiallymesenchymalcells.
