Transthyretin(TTR),generallycalledprealbumin,isaplasmaproteinthatplaysanimportantroleinphysiologysuchasatransporterofhormonethyroxineandretinal-bindingprotein.Afterproducedprimarilyintheliver,TTRisexcretedintotheplasma.TTRrepresentsadisproportionatefraction(25%)ofCSFprotein,promptingthesuggestionthatitiseitherselectivelytransportedacrosstheblood-CSFbarrierorsynthesizeddenovowithinthecentralnervoussystem.Transthyretinisaconstituentfoundtotheneuriticplaques,neurofibrillarytangles,andmicroangiopathiclesionsofsenilecerebralamyloid.Ithasbeenreportedthatmorethan40differentmutationsintheTTRgeneassociatedwithamyloiddeposition.Thyroidhormone-bindingprotein.Probablytransportsthyroxinefromthebloodstreamtothebrain.
