Thymidineglycol(TG)isoneofthemajoroxidationproductsofDNA.Thymidine(T)canbedamagedbyoxidativestresssuchasrADIationandenergymetabolism.TwodifferentpathwaystoformTGhavebeensuggested.DeoxythymidineinDNAisdirectlyoxidisedbyhydroxyradical,toformTG.TGcanbealsoformedthroughanintermediatethymidinechlorohydrin,whichisderivedfromhypochlorousacid(HOCl)fromneutrophilmyeloperoxidase.ThymidineglycolisderivedfromDNA,notfromRNA.TGistheoxidativestressMarkersecificforDNAdamage.Incomparisonwith8-hydroxy-2"-deoxyguanosine(8-OHdG),whichisthebestknownDNAoxidationproductitwasshownthatinalipopolysaccharide(LPS)-treatedmouseliver,8-OHdGcanbestainedwithin24hoursafterLPStreatment.TGcanbedetectedwithin6hours,andremainsatleastfor72hours.
