Retinolbindingprotein(RBP),a21kDasingle-chainglycoprotein,istheprimaryplasmatransportproteinforretinol(vitaminA1).RBPsolubilizesthewater-insolubleretinolandworksasavehiclefortransporttothetargetorgans,anditmayalsoprotecttheboundretinolfromoxidativedamageintheplasma.ThecirculatingRBPbindstoanotherproteincalledtransthyretin(TTR),a55-kDaplasmathyroxinebindingprotein.Suchprotein-proteincomplexformationisthoughttopreventglomerularfiltrationoflowmolecularmassRBP.SerumlevelsofRBPareusefulinthedetectionofliverdisease,protein-caloriemalnutrition,andvitaminAdeficiencies.Inaddition,thedeterminationofRBPserumlevelshasbeenshowntobeimportantinthemediationofantitumoreffects.Deliversretinolfromtheliverstorestotheperipheraltissues.Inplasma,theRBP-retinolcomplexinteractswithtransthyretin,thispreventsitslossbyfiltrationthroughthekidneyglomeruli.
