Pigmentepithelium-derivedfactor(PEDF)isa47kDasecretedglycoproteinthatbelongstothenon-inhibitoryserpinfamilygroup.PEDFiswidelyexpressedinadultandfetaltissues,includingbrain,spinalcord,plasma,bone,prostate,pancreas,heartandlung.PEDFactsasanangiogenesisinhibitorwithneurotrophic,immunomodulationandantitumorproperties.Itfunctionsasanti-angiogenicagentbycounterbalancingtheproangiogeniceffectofVEGF.PEDFisoneofthemostabundantproteinsreleasedbyADIpocytesandinducesinsulinresistanceinadipocytesandhumanskeletalmusclecells.Recently,ithasbeenreportedthatPEDFissufficienttomaintaintheself-renewalofpluripotenthumanembryonicstemcells.
