Enolase(2-phosphogly-ceratehydrolyaseorphosphopyruvatehydrates)isaglycolyticenzymethatcatalyzesthedehydrationandconversionof2-phosphoglyceratetophosphoenolpyruvate.Itcomprisesthreedistinctsubunits,α,βandγ.NonNeuronalEnolase(ENO1)isanisoformofmammalianenolaseandiscomposedof2αsubunits.ThegeneforENO1alsoencodesashortermonomericstructurallensprotein,tau-crystallin.Multifunctionalenzymethat,aswellasitsroleinglycolysis,playsapartinvariousprocessessuchasgrowthcontrol,hypoxiatoleranceandallergicresponses.Mayalsofunctionintheintravascularandpericellularfibrinolyticsystemduetoitsabilitytoserveasareceptorandactivatorofplasminogenonthecellsurfaceofseveralcell-typessuchasleukocytesandneurons.Stimulatesimmunoglobulinproduction.UsedasadiagnosticMarkerformanytumorsand,intheheterodimericform,α/γ,asamarkerforhypoxicbraininjuryaftercardiacarrest.Alsomarkerforendometriosis.Antibodiesagainstα-enolasearepresentinserafrompatientswithcancer-associatedretinopathysyndrome(CAR),aprogressiveblindingdiseasewhichoccursinthepresenceofsystemictumorgrowth,primarilysmall-cellcarcinomaofthelungandothermalignancies.IsidentifiedasanautoantigeninHashimotoencephalopathy(HE)arareautoimmunediseaseassociatedwithHashimotothyroiditis(HT).HTisadisorderinwhichdestructiveprocessesovercomethepotentialcapacityofthyroidreplacementleADIngtohypothyroidismMultifunctionalenzymethat,aswellasitsroleinglycolysis,playsapartinvariousprocessessuchasgrowthcontrol,hypoxiatoleranceandallergicresponses.Mayalsofunctionintheintravascularandpericellularfibrinolyticsystemduetoitsabilitytoserveasareceptorandactivatorofplasminogenonthecellsurfaceofseveralcell-typessuchasleukocytesandneurons.Stimulatesimmunoglobulinproduction.
