Nicotinamidephosphoribosyltransferase(Nampt;pre-Bcellcolony-enhancingfactor;PBEF;Visfatin)isan52kDaADIpokinesecretedbyadiposetissueandinvolvedinthebiosynthesisofnicotinamideadeninedinucleotide(NAD+).TwoformsofNamptexist,anintracellularform(iNampt)andanextracellularform(eNampt).WhilethefunctionofiNamptasanessentialandrate-limitingNAD+biosyntheticenzymeiswellestablished,thephysiologicalroleofeNamptisstillamatterofdebate.Nampthasvariousfunctions,includingthepromotionofvascularsmoothmusclecellmaturationandinhibitionofneutrophilapoptosis.Itactivatesinsulinreceptorandhasinsulin-mimeticeffects,loweringbloodglucoseandimprovinginsulinsensitivity.Theproteinishighlyexpressedinvisceralfatandserumlevelsoftheproteincorrelatewithobesity.
