Myeloperoxidaseisamajorneutrophilproteinandisalsopresentinmonocytes.Inneutrophils,itisstoredinazurophilicgranulesandreleasedduringphagocytosis.Itisahemeenzymethatusesthesuperoxideandhydrogenperoxidegeneratedbytheneutrophiloxidativebursttoproducehypochlorousacidandotherreactiveoxidants.Theproducedhypochlorousacidreactswithanddestroysbacteria.Inmanyinflammatorypathologies,suchascysticfibrosisandrheumatoidarthritis,neutrophilsarealsocausingtissuedamage.MPOisthoughttobethemostpromisingcardiacMarkeratthemoment.InadditiontothatMPOisagoodinflammatorybiomarkerforautoimmune,inflammatorydiseasesandcancer.Partofthehostdefensesystemofpolymorphonuclearleukocytes.ItisresponsIBLeformicrobicidalactivityagainstawiderangeoforganisms.InthestimulatedPMN,MPOcatalyzestheproductionofhypohalousacids,primarilyhypochlorousacidinphysiologicsituations,andothertoxicintermediatesthatgreatlyenhancePMNmicrobicidalactivity.
