Theinter-α-trypsininhibitor(ITI,IαI)family,atypicalandclassicalexampleforprotein-glycosaminoglycan-protein(PGP)complexes,occursconstitutivelyinplasmaatrelativelyhighconcentrationsandisaresultofalternatecombinationsofthreekindsofheavychainswithacommonlightchain,thebikuninproteoglycan.BikuninhastwoproteinaseinhibitordomainsandbelongstotheKunitz-typeproteaseinhibitorfamily;itdisplaysaninhibitoryactivityagainsttrypsin,leukocyteelastaseandplasmin.Theheavychainsdonothaveanyproteaseinhibitorypropertiesbuthavethecapacitytointeractinvitroandinvivowithhyaluronicacidandthisbindingpromotesthestabilityoftheextra-cellularmatrix.TheITIproteinfamilyissUSPectedofplayingakeyroleintheextra-cellularmatrixBIOLOGy.Mayactasacarrierofhyaluronaninserumorasabindingproteinbetweenhyaluronanandothermatrixprotein,includingthoseoncellsurfacesintissuestoregulatethelocalization,synthesisanddegradationofhyaluronanwhichareessentialtocellsundergoingbiologicalprocesses.Containsapotentialpeptidewhichcouldstimulateabroadspectrumofphagocytoticcells.
