Cytochromecisasmallhemeproteinconsistingelectron-transportchaininmitochondriaandtransferselectronsbetweencomplexIIIandIV.Itishighlyconservedthroughdiversespeciesfromunicellularmicroorganismstoanimalsandplants.Cytochromecisalsoanintermediateinapoptosis.Currently,itiswidelyacceptedthatmitochondriaplayakeyroleintheregulationofapoptosis.Inmammaliancells,amajorcaspaseactivationpathwayisthecytochromec-initiatedpathway.Inthispathway,avarietyofapoptoticstimulicausecytochromecreleasefrommitochondria.Inthecytosol,cytochromecinteractswithitsadaptormolecule,Apaf-1,resultingintherecruitment,processingandactivationofpro-caspase-9inthepresenceofdATPorATP.Caspase-9,inturn,cleavesandactivatespro-caspase-3and-7;theseeffectorcaspasesareresponsIBLeforthecleavageofvariousproteinsleADIngtobiochemicalandmorphologicalfeaturescharacteristicofapoptosis.Electroncarrierprotein.Theoxidizedformofthecytochromechemegroupcanacceptanelectronfromthehemegroupofthecytochromec1subunitofcytochromereductase.Cytochromecthentransfersthiselectrontothecytochromeoxidasecomplex,thefinalproteincarrierinthemitochondrialelectron-transportchain.Playsaroleinapoptosis.Suppressionoftheanti-apoptoticmembersoractivationofthepro-apoptoticmembersoftheBcl-2familyleadstoalteredmitochondrialmembranepermeabilityresultinginreleaseofcytochromecintothecytosol.BindingofcytochromectoApaf-1triggerstheactivationofcaspase-9,whichthenacceleratesapoptosisbyactivatingothercaspases.
