ThehumanCatecholamine-SulfatingPhenolSulfotransferase(CSPS)istheonlysulfotransferasethatcatalysesthesulfationofcatecholamins,inparticulartheneurotransmitterdopamine,withhighactivity.CSPSisrequiredforstimulationbyMn2+ofthesulfatingactivityandexpressedinthehumanintestine,brain,plateletandothertissues.Inthebrainitmayplayaroleinregulatingthelevelsofdopamine.Italsoservesasadetoxifyingfunctionintheintestine,whereitmaydetoxifypotentiallylethaldietarymonoamines.Catalyzesthesulfateconjugationofphenolicmonoamines(neurotransmitterssuchasdopamine,norepinephrineandSEROtonin)andphenolicandcatecholdrugs.
