Carcinoembryonicantigen(CEA)wasfirstdescribedin1965byGoldandFreedmanwhentheyidentifiedanantigenthatwaspresentinbothfetalcolonandcolonadenocarcinomabutthatappearedtobeabsentfromhealthyadultcolon.CEAisaglycoproteincontainingapproximately50%carbohydratewithamolecularweightof180kDa.CEAandrelatedgenesmakeuptheCEAfamilybelongingtotheimmunoglobulinsuperfamily.Inhumans,thecarcinoembryonicantigenfamilyconsistsof29genes,18ofwhicharenormallyexpressed.CEAhasproventobeasuitabletargetantigenforthedetectionofprimaryandmetastaticcolorectalandsomeothercarcinomas.AlthoughserafromhealthyindividualsandfrompatientswithotherdiseasesgenerallyhadlowlevelsofCEA,CEAisoneofthemostwidelyusedtumorMarkersworldwide.Itsmainapplicationismostlyingastrointestinalcancers,especiallyincolorectalmalignancy.CEAassaysarenowgenerallyacceptedclinicallyasausefulandcost-efficienttoolinmonitoringofcoloncancerfollowingsurgery.Cellsurfaceglycoproteinthatplaysaroleincelladhesionandinintracellularsignaling.ReceptorforE.coliDradhesins.
