Hexonisaoneofadenoviruscapsidproteins(240hexonsperparticle).Eachhexoncapsomereishomotrimerofthehexonprotein,acomplexproteinof>900residues.49humanadenovirusSEROtypeshavebeendiscovered,anddividedintosixsubgroup,AtoE,basedonavarietyofobservation.Theyareanimportantcauseofrespiratoryillness,conjunctivitis,andgastroenteritisandhavemorerecentlybeenrecognizedasapotentialcauseofsexuallytransmitteddiseases.Adenovirusvectors,particularlythosebasedonAd5,haveshowngreatpromiseforthedevelopmentofgenetherapyprotocolsandhavebeenusedforclinicalpurpose.Morerecently,polyclonalantibodiesagainstadenoviruswereusedforquantifyingadenoviraltiters.Thisproteinisoneofthestructuralproteinsintheviralcoatandissynthesizedduringlateinfection.
