Thecomplementsystemisapartofthelargerimmunesystemandthreebiochemicalpathwaysarepresent:theclassicalcomplementpathway,thealternativepathway,andthemannose-bindinglectinpathway.HumancomplementfactorC8isoneoffivecomponents(C5b,C6,C7,C8,andC9)thatinteracttoformthecytolyticmembraneattackcomplex(MAC)whichisthecytolyticendproductofthecomplementcascade.MACistypicallyformedonthesurfaceofintrudingpathogenicbacterialasaresultoftheactivationofthecomplementsystem,anditisoneoftheultimateweaponsoftheimmunesystem.C8iscomposedofanα(64kDa),β(64kDa),andγ(22kDa)subunit.WithinC8,thesubunitsarearrangedasadisulfide-linkedC8α-γheterodimerthatisnoncovalentlyassociatedwithC8β.DuringMACformation,C8αmediatesbindingandself-polymerizationofC9toformapore-likestructureonthemembraneoftargetcells.Constituentofthemembraneattackcomplex(MAC)thatplaysakeyroleintheinnateandadaptiveimmuneresponsebyformingporesintheplasmamembraneoftargetcells.
